Motörhead: The wörld is yours

21/01/11  ||  Habakuk

Every two years, it’s Metal Christmas. Such has been the rule since 1996, which started Motörhead’s steady two year full length release rhythm. Granted, at least 2002’s “Hammered” got stuck in the chimney a bit, but the following triumdiscate “Inferno”/“Kiss of death”/“Motörizer” showed the fact that at the same time they’re growing grey beards like him, Motörhead deliver the goods Santa Claus style.

Now how is it for 2010 – can they keep the pace? The answer is two-fold. Which is already a letdown for people like me. The answer should have been an all-out “YES”. But it’s not. So, what we have is the great production of the last albums, a well-oiled flow and an old school riff rock sound faster, dirtier and more metal than anything everybody else can come up with. An experienced band. Everything, it all works fine. What I miss are the absolute ass-kickers. Where is “Rock out”? “Be my baby”? “Killers”? “Trigger”? “Smiling like a killer”? “Down on me”? “Runaround man”? “Mass death by ultimate holocaust of kill”?

There is only one high speed kick in the butt on this one, and that’s “Bye bye bitch bye bye”. The rest sure have drive, tension and stomping rhythms, don’t get me wrong. This album is something you can ride your car or frantically tap your foot to (or both at the same time) just fine. Somehow I still feel underwhelmed, though. Expectations too high? Band keeping it too safe? Mixture.

It’s “just” more of the same. Most bands half the age would kill to create an album like this, so for me as a devoted Motörheaddo, it’s a safe bet. I know they aren’t reinventing the wheel. Still, I would have hoped for more or better hooks, more speed and more tracks that grab me by the throat immediately.
Oh well, there’s still a lot of two-year periods until the world comes to an end when Lemmy turns into an all-consuming black hmole.
